Goleta South Santa Barbara Neighborhood

North and South Goleta is separated by the scenic Pacific Coast Highway 101.The two are bounded on the West and East by Highway 154 -- considered the entrance to the Santa Ynez Wine Country -- and Winchester Canyon Road. Collectively known as the Goleta Valley, it was a prominent lemon-growing region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Goleta South is known for its fine beaches and high-tech industry. It is home to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).

Once primarily agricultural, it turned into a high-tech region following World War II. Goleta Valley residents supported the construction of Cachuma Lake, which provided water to the town and enabled a housing boom after the war. Establishing significant research and aerospace firms in the area, Goleta South remains a bedroom community for the city of Santa Barbara.

The climate is mild and sunny all year, with an average daytime temperature between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit making it perfect for year-round activities.

History of Goleta

Six thousand-year-old Native American village remains have been excavated near the airport making Goleta one of the oldest historical sites in Santa Barbara. Paradoxically, it is one of the youngest residential districts having been incorporated in 2002.

In the old days The Turnpike Stage Road ended near present day San Marcos High School. The toll road was used for getting over San Marcos Pass into the Santa Ynez valley for those traveling north toward Santa Maria and on to San Francisco.
